The area of Chilaw Secretary’s Division is 91 square Kilo Meters in extent. The line of demarcation is west by: Sea shore, south by: Long lying Kakkapalliya, north by: Daduru Oya river, east by: Road dividing Kurunegala District and Puttalam District.
The name “Muthe halawatha” was been given to Chilaw for the varieties of pearls collected from the sea of it in olden times. Though diminution of that resource at present times, Chilaw became a fishery area for the lagoon here.
As same production of sea food such as prawns, crabs and creatures with shells Chilaw became a prominent fishery area and an allied trade centers. As same the said Chilaw division’s eastern and northern boarders lying in Deduru Oya river bank and it is a significant agriculture area. Various kinds of vegetables and fruits are produced here in large scale. Chilaw is an agriculture cumfishery area. This is an urban sector situating centrally in Puttalam district connected with the highways to Kurunegala and Puttalam and the Rail road in the coastal line. All these facilities made Chilaw as a prominent area.
Chilaw Secretary’s Division consisting of 49 Grama Niladhari divisions with a population of about 63188. The people belongs to various races and religions are living in this area.
